Generator or battery for an outdoor event? What the evidence says
A portable generator is the default way to power an outdoor wedding, a film set or a remote camp. It is cheap and familiar. It also brings noise, fuel and exhaust to the exact place people have gathered. Four public sources set out the costs that a rental price does not show.
Noise is treated as a disturbance
United States national parks forbid running an electric generating plant above 60 decibels, A-weighted, measured at 50 feet (36 CFR 2.12). The rule sits in a section titled "Audio disturbances", which is how federal land managers classify generator noise. A battery unit has no engine, so it produces little more than the hum of an inverter fan.
Carbon monoxide kills people every year
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that portable generators cause an average of nearly 100 carbon monoxide deaths a year in the United States. The deaths cluster after storms, when generators run near homes. A battery burns nothing and gives off no carbon monoxide.
Diesel exhaust is a known human carcinogen
In June 2012 the International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of the World Health Organization, classified diesel engine exhaust as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1), on sufficient evidence that it causes lung cancer. Large rental generators usually run on diesel.
Small engines out-pollute cars
The California Air Resources Board found that small off-road engines, the class that includes portable generators, now emit more smog-forming pollution in California than the state's passenger cars. It requires new portable generators sold in California to be zero-emission from model year 2028.
Why it matters in Maine
Maine is heavily forested, and falling branches take power lines down often. In 2020 Maine had the highest average number of power interruptions per customer of any state, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Many of its loveliest event sites, on islands, headlands and lakes, have no grid connection at all.
What a battery unit changes
Happy Planet Power's unit delivers up to 12 kW from an 18 kWh battery, topped up by 1 kW of solar panels, with 30 A and 50 A receptacles and 15 standard outlets. It runs a DJ for about a day or a full string-light canopy for days, without an engine, a fuel can or an exhaust pipe. Tell us about your event.
