Phone charging stations for festivals and fairs

Happy Planet Power, Portland, Maine. Updated October 2026.

One Happy Planet Power unit stores enough energy for roughly 700 full phone charges, before any solar top-up. That makes it a self-contained charging station for a festival, a fair or a race, with no generator and no extension cords back to a building.

The arithmetic

A full smartphone charge takes roughly 15 to 20 watt-hours once charging losses are counted. The unit's 18 kWh battery, with about 80 percent usable, holds about 14,400 watt-hours, so it covers about 700 full charges. The solar panels add roughly 1.5 to 4 kWh a day in Maine depending on the weather, which is another 75 to 200 charges.

How festivals use it

  • Sponsored charging. The festival or a sponsor rents the station and charging is free to attendees, with the sponsor's name on it.
  • First aid, information and accessibility tents. Quiet, fume-free power where staff and attendees sit for long periods.
  • Small stages and vendor rows. Acoustic sets, card readers, lights and fans.

What it does not do

A main stage sound and lighting rig draws far more than 12 kW, so a battery unit is not a substitute for a festival's main power. It is best where quiet, clean power matters more than raw size.
